Holiday Plans For 2013

Papa and I always book our family holiday in January. We like to do it early in the year because it gives the family something to look forward to after Christmas and the excitement of the festive season has faded. Also it means there is usually more availability if we book early. It lifts the spirits to dream of warm summer holidays beside the sea, on a cold, frosty morning in January.

So, where do we fancy taking the kids next year? Well, we love the British countryside and we usually have a knack of picking great UK breaks. We choose not to go abroad, mainly because we are frugal creatures but also simply because we enjoy holidays in the UK. By opting out of long haul flights, we are also reducing our carbon emissions.

What type of accommodation do we prefer? We are a large family and even though our two eldest kids have flown the nest, they still like to holiday with us every year, so we usually prefer a self catering break. It just gives us more freedom if we can cook for ourselves. There are loads of places in the UK that offer fantastic self catering accommodation, like Butlins.

Where in the UK? First thing we will do in January, is look for a place by the beach. We love the sea, so being based close to a beach is essential for us. I feel totally refreshed after being beside the sea for a break. It calms and soothes me. There are so many stunning beaches UK, from the Scottish Highlands right down to Lands End in the West Country.

How will we travel? We always travel by train. I'm a bit geeky and love train journeys. It adds to the adventure and means we have no stressful traffic jams on the motorways. We have a family railcard, that we use a lot throughout the year and manage to save loads of money on train travel.

Who will we go with? The kids usually like to bring a friend with them, and Papa and I have always allowed this because it gives us some peace if they have someone to hang out with. We often go on holiday in a large group with other families or Friends. The more the merrier. In fact some of our kids Friends who we used to take on holiday with us when they were kids, still come away with us now they are adults. We like our holidays to be really sociable for all of us.

Have you thought about your holiday for next year yet?

  1. We went away in September this year (we always avoid school holidays) and decided that the days are starting to get a bit short by then, so we have already booked next years holiday, we are going to North Wales in June - somewhere I've always wanted to go, lots of steam railways and Rog wants to go to Portmerion - home of The Prisoner. Its great to have that to look forward to.
